The Alpha Foundation of Howard County, Inc. (AFHC) in partnership with the physicians from the Onyx Medical Society developed this website to provide Howard County youth with resources to address mental health issues. By creating a website or search engine known as Find-A-Doc – Howard! Youth and teens will enter key words and receive a list of mental healthcare professionals within the immediate area who provide healthcare services to Howard County African American and other students of color. Mental healthcare professionals from the Onyx Medical Society who have extended mental health telehealth services were instrumental in this effort. The Find-A-Doc – Howard! web application helps increase mental healthcare awareness among the youth and the Howard County community at large.
Launched in 2001, the Alpha Foundation of Howard County, Inc. (AFHC) was established as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt entity to provide funding for the educational initiatives that are sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. – Kappa Phi Lambda (KPL) Chapter. We seek to provide academic enrichment to African American youth in Howard County that further enables their success in post-secondary training and education, and ultimately, creates a clear pathway for life opportunity and success.
Alongside community support and partnership, the AFHC works in conjunction with KPL to provide educational programming that assists our motivated students towards achieving ambitious goals, including leadership experience, increased scholastic performance, and financial assistance for higher education. Examples of such programming include sponsorship of the Annual Harambee Conference, the Leadership Development Institute, the High Achievers program, and our signature mentoring program, the Alpha Achievers program, featuring chapters at each of the twelve (12) high schools within the Howard County Public School System.
Onyx Medical Society is the only medical society in Howard County, MD serving and supporting physicians of African descent who work, live, and play in the county. Our mission is to create a space for current and future black physicians to thrive and to be the voice for African American health in Howard County. Our vision is to build lasting collaboration among black physicians, improve the health of black residents, ignite business growth for members, and inspire the next generation of black physicians.
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has an Alumni chapter, Kappa Phi Lambda in Columbia, MD that was chartered on March 1, 1975. The chapter was an extension and reaffirmation of Alpha’s early concepts that the common bond of Brotherhood extends beyond college days and the commitment to serve is a lifetime obligation.
Since it’s conception in March 1975, the Chapter has grown and developed as a Brotherhood. In the true spirit of Alpha Phi Alpha, the Brotherhood continues to reach out creatively to serve the community. Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter dedicates itself to the spirit and precepts established by our Founders.
