Attention-Deficit /
Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a disorder that affects your ability to pay attention, concentrate, listen, stay organized, remember information, and have self-control. Everyone has trouble with these abilities from time to time, but if you have ADHD, you struggle almost constantly—both at school and in other areas of your life, like at home, when playing sports, or even while practicing your favorite hobby or activity.

Signs of ADHD

Signs of ADHD include:

Difficulty listening and paying attention — You might sit in class and blank out, wondering what your teacher has been talking about for the last 30 minutes. When someone talks to you, you feel like you didn’t hear what they just said and you need them to repeat themselves.

    • Becoming easily distracted — When you’re trying to concentrate, a noise or someone having a conversation nearby can easily get you off track.
    • Disorganization — You might struggle to keep your desk at school, your bedroom, and your school bag organized. You might have papers everywhere, making it difficult for you to find anything.
    • Forgetfulness and needing reminders to do things — You might forget things like turning in assignments or bringing home a book you need to finish a project. Your teacher or parents might need to remind you of things like finishing your homework.
    • Hyperactivity — This means that you might have difficulty sitting still in class. Maybe you become impatient when standing in line. If you have to stay in one place for a long time—like in a car or a waiting room—you get fidgety and start touching things around you.
    • Becoming bored easily — If something doesn’t interest you, you have to stop or come back to it later.
    • Making mistakes on tasks at school and at home — This often happens because you tend to rush through things. For instance, you might do your math homework quickly, but then you find that you got several easy problems wrong.
    • Interrupting other people or talking a lot — You might struggle to wait for others to finish talking, causing you to interrupt a lot. Maybe you blurt out an answer in class without raising your hand.
